Kraftbomb TOMORROW!!

Saturday, June 27, 2009

Yay! Only one more sleep to go!!

Kraftbomb is tomorrow and it's going to be rather special. As a special treat this month your favourite city-side market will also celebrating the World Wide Vegan Bake Sale and a number of the vendors will have some yummy vegan baked goodies for sale, but get there early because it'll all go very fast!!

There will of course be all the usual friendly faces selling their amazing crafty wares, home made lemonade, NZ Cupcake Queen Cupcakes and a playground to entertain the kids - while we single-handedly save New Zealand from the recession by supporting local businesses (that last point may be a bit of a stretch, but I'm sure you appreciate my optimism)!!

Sunday 28th June
11am - 2pm
@ The Grey Lynn Community Centre
Richmond Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland City

New designs!

Saturday, June 20, 2009

As I have had the entire week off Uni, I have been busily crafting away for the upcoming market (Kraftbomb and the Devonport Craft Market). The week has gone by SO fast, but I have managed to completed 27 new wall embellishments, 8 new magnets and 9 or so new brooches.

I'm really interested to see how the brooches are received, I've worn some of my prototypes out and have had a few people stop me in the street to ask where I got it from so I'm taking that as a good sign!
I love the new wall emebellishments, they came out really well. Both the Nga Huia and Kereru I have done in several different fabrics so will see how they go. It's always a bit of a risk coming up with a new design.
Two other designs I am still making (and hope to have ready for the markets!) are a little owl and a squirrel. These will be in keeping with the little woodland inspired creatures I already have, like the Fawn and Rabbit.

It's been a really full on week this week, I've been having physio for my neck which I have put out by hunching so much over my crafts, and over my lap top so have been feeling VERY uncomfortable. Only now do I no longer look like a rugby player with no neck movement, still have a few more sessions next week, but should be as good as new after those.

The Devo Craft Market...

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Because I'm totally not busy enough already (ha. I kid, we all know that's crazy talk) I will be having a go at the Devonport Craft Market on the 5th of July, and I actually can't wait. I've heard some really good feedback from people about how much fun it is, so it will be nice to meet some new crafters

Sarah (the lovely organiser of the Devonport Market and proprietor of TOTO who I did some packaging design for) asked me to design this lovely poster for her, and I just love it! Sarah wanted something with a silhouette of a tree and full of native birds, so it was great to be able to include the designs that I do with all my native birds, and some new ones that I have come up with too.

Photo's of the new designs to be posted shortly.... mark it in your diaries people as it would be great to see you there!

new fabrics and some inspiration...

Monday, June 15, 2009

As some of you may know (from my facebook post earlier) I went out today and did some supply shopping. I got all the usual bits and bobs, and these 2 absolutely lovely fabrics.

Well, I actually had my eye on them a few weeks ago, but wanted to think about them for a bit and maybe design something with them in mind - as they were quite (well, actually, very) expensive! Now I have the new design up my sleeve, I was free to go and flex my spending muscle.

I just love them so much, I can't wait to get making stuff this week! I'm on holidays from school all week and am totally going to dedicate the time to crafting for Kraftbomb on the 28th of June and the Devonport market on the 5th of July - so many markets at the moment!!

Heart on your sleeve, destined for your favourite jumper

Saturday, June 13, 2009

I have a bit of a brooch obsession at the moment, I just can't get enough of them. So now I have them to share with everyone! These 'Heart On Your Sleeve' brooches are so pretty, and they are so much fun to make. Each one is different with the way that they are embellished.

They are made in the same way as my wall art - they are hand drawn, covered in fabric and then finished with a protective spray and pretty bits and pieces. They have a quality brooch pin on the back that will definitely keep your heart safe and unbroken.

So wear your heart on your sleeve! They'll be up on Etsy and the like soon...

Phew, all finished...

Thursday, June 11, 2009

It's been a long week! And I am very proud to say that I have finished my assignment EARLY and handed it in earlier today. I really thought that it was going to take much longer, but once I broke it down into little bits it wasn't nearly as bad.

We had to design a character to be made into a Wall Decal, along with the logo and packaging to go with it and it needed to be a suitable style so it could be sold in Iko Iko in Auckland. I decided not to go the super easy route and redesign my own stuff (hehe) and I wanted to do something that wasn't quite my style, just to show a bit of variety with my work (as one does).

On Tuesday we had an awesome talk from the guys from Muk Puddy who had some great pointers about character design and animation in general - it was such an interesting tutorial! I really liked the use of flat colours that they were into and basic shapes. While I was researching, I also came across Toki Doki, which is usually not my thing, but some of his stuff was pretty cool.

So I got pen to paper and after filling up pretty much my entire journal, I came up with this little lady. I think she's so sweet, and it was so much fun to do something different. I wanted to use shaded colours rather than black lines, and simple shapes - and she's definitely something that I will revisit later for my portfolio to refine a wee bit, but for now, boxes checked and I'm happy!

Here's the pic of my client composition...

New logo

Friday, June 5, 2009

So for my assignment this week, we had to design a logo and identity for a company that had been picked at random by our tutor - and surprise, surprise - my name came out! Actually, it's not much of a surprise, as I saw her at Kraftbomb and we had a yarn about it and she said she'd put my name in the mix, seeing as I had to do it anyway!

So I've made a new blog header with the logo, what do you think? Let me know! But you have to be CONSTRUCTIVE, don't just have a dig/gush for the sake of it, gimmie some substance =)

Anyway, the rest of the assignment was great and I really love my idea's as they are rather original in the way the my new identity has been designed. I wish I had loads of money to get all the beautiful letterhead, business cards and comp slips printed up properly! One day soon...

I'm really proud of myself, fingers crossed for a good mark!

Princesses and Ice Skates...

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

What two better things to be combined?! Well, my little girl Grace and I thought so anyhow.

2 months ago I bought us tickets to see the Disney Princesses on Ice, unfortunately this also fell on the same day as Kraftbomb... but fret not as we were able to do both. Grace was dropped off to Kraftbomb so that we could go straight there (after of course she attempted to destroy a few stalls, apologies to EVERYONE who felt hurricane Grace).

It was a great show, and we both had an awesome time sitting in the second row, right by all the action. Graces eyes were like saucers almost the entire time. The photo's are really bad, but I had to put a couple of them up.

Kraftbomb eye candy...

Hidie Hi!

So Kraftbomb on Sunday was fantastic! The weather was lovely and sunny, with plenty of people coming to take a gander and buy some pretty things. As always, it was so great to have a chat to people - especially my lovely neighbours R.W Scissors and Hazel (I forget your stall name, but I love the brooch I bought from you!!).

Lot's of lovely wall embellishments found new homes, and almost everyone stopped for a chat which I always like.

My fingers and firmly crossed (and maybe slightly frozen together with this cold) that I get a space for June, it's really great to be part of the community and have people come back for more goodies.

Thanks to everyone that made it!
